Human Options Volunteers to be Recognized at 2017 Spirit of Volunteerism Awards

OneOC Spirit of Volunteerism AwardsRecognizing exemplary volunteer service since 1976, OneOC’s Spirit of Volunteerism Awards will honor Human Options volunteers on April 24th at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.

“Our volunteers play an integral role in supporting the mission of our agency and we are so proud to congratulate them on receiving this special distinction,” said Maricela Rios-Faust, Chief Executive Officer.

Family law attorney Melinda Gomez has been an integral member of our Pro Bono Committee, bringing two new volunteer attorneys into the fold who now conduct their own family law and immigration clinics on behalf of our clients. Each month she continues to provide free advice and counseling sessions to our legal advocacy clients, and has taught our 40-hour domestic violence training participants about the intersection between domestic violence and family law.

Bringing a welcome respite to our emergency shelter families is the Mentoring Group. This group of mothers with their teenage daughters and sons provide a fun interactive experience through food, games and activities for our clients during several major holidays throughout the year including Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. They also strive to model positive communication and healthy relationship skills and provide a safe environment for our families to feel comfortable at.

Attorney Christina Helwig has been a pro bono volunteer at our emergency shelter and Family Resource Center monthly immigration clinic, and has provided her expertise in immigration law as part of our state mandated 40-hour domestic violence training. Christina provides vital counsel to survivors of domestic violence educating them about the types of immigration relief they are eligible for, which can often be a major step in clients finding the courage to leave their abusive partners.
