Being afraid at home is a terrible way to live. Too many of us have been hurt, betrayed, and bullied by the very people who should be most careful with us. How awful to dread the one place that should be our safety and refuge.

Domestic violence was around long before I got here. I will do what is in my power to help break the cycle of domestic violence for as long as I live. Beyond that I plan to leave a gift to Human Options, the organization I trust to carry on this worthy work. This is a part of my legacy and an example to my family, friends, and colleagues. We have the power to change things to ensure a better future. With my gift, this important work will continue.

Dear Vivian,

I wanted to update you about my life and why I chose Human Options to be the One-Time Death Benefit Recipient of my California State Teachers Retirement Plan.

I live in Sonoma County, California, which is 50 miles north of San Francisco. I am a substitute teacher for the County and a Cultural Arts Commissioner for the City of Rohnert Park.

I am an exhibiting artist. I paint mostly in acrylics and watercolors. The process of creating and making art has been a catharsis for me. The experience has helped heal some of the pain from an abusive marriage of 31 years. Many of my paintings have documented my journey during my stay at Human Options and while I was rebuilding my life.

I have been in a loving relationship for 10 years and I live in a safe environment free from fear with my dog Monet. I am free to be me.

I have chosen Human Options as the recipient of my California State Teachers’ One time Death Benefit because Human Options saved my life and I want to give other women and children a chance at life. I would not have been able to accomplish all of the above if it had not been for Human Options.
