It’s Never Too Late to Learn Boundaries

A Safe Options for Seniors Success Story

Jane came to see us because she was being abused by her two sons. She believed she would not be able to stop them from abusing her because they are handicapped. We worked with her on reframing her sons’ disabilities and had her really look at how she was enabling them to use their “handicaps” as excuses for the abuse. Through six month of counseling and attending a support group, Jane realized that even though her sons have disabilities, they are not unable to take care of themselves.

She obtained a restraining order against one son who was then arrested and returned to the state where the warrant was issued, He is currently in jail and will soon stand trial on domestic violence charges. He is also getting help for both his medical and emotional issues. As for the other son, Jane has had an eviction notice served and he is expected to be out of the house soon.

Jane has recently begun to enjoy her regular activities again and is looking forward to relocating to Florida to be near friends and family. She said she never realized how much her sons controlled her life and made her feel responsible for their disabilities. She now knows that her sons are capable of making choices and must be held accountable for those choices.
