Breaking the Cycle of Teen Dating Violence through Leadership

The month of February was recognized as Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention month. This was a busy month for Human Options’ community educators as they traveled throughout Orange County to different schools, businesses and groups providing compelling teen dating violence presentations and workshops. They provided over 20 presentations, reaching approximately 674 students, faculty, and community members. The community educators focused on teaching middle and high school students, educators, and parents how to be social leaders through what is called the “Bystander Approach.” They sought to empower the most influential and involved students through their LAB workshop (Leaders as Active Bystanders). This one-of-a-kind workshop empowered over 100 Irvine High School…

Building A Community for Social Responsibility

People often ask me how to start a non-profit. The answer is clear: Passion, clear purpose, a powerful mission, and the perseverance to reach out to many and build through tough times – a complicated but effective path. A path not unlike the one a for-profit start-up takes but with one difference. That difference is the coming together of a caring and committed community. Human Options is the product of just such a caring and committed community of individuals. In the beginning there were only a few of us sharing a passion to help build a community where no woman or child would ever be afraid in her or his…

Teens Pay it Forward—Everyone can make a difference

Blog by Vivian Clecak, Founding CEO One out of five teens has been involved in date abuse. We read again and again about teens who see a rape and either ignore it or shoot a video and share it with other friends. As adults we ask ourselves how we can possibly change this teen culture of acceptance and even approval of violence, of blaming the victim, of not caring about the girl who was unconscious and vulnerable. Five days a week, sometimes as many as five hours a day, Human Options’ community educator is teaching teens in high schools and community programs about the nature of date abuse, warning signs,…

Legacies Happen–Don’t Leave a Bad One

Each of us, throughout our lives, has encountered a wide array of people. As we look back we might remember a teacher, a neighbor, a friend, a leader, or even a stranger who made a lasting impression on us. At any given moment of life, we share time and space with these people; whether it be in stores, on the highway, on a bus, or at an event. Some encounters are brief, some are long-term, some are intense, and some hold great meaning to us. Regardless of the type of encounter, each moment has some type of impact on us, and a lifetime of moments creates a legacy. A legacy…
