For children living at an emergency shelter, celebrating a birthday or a holiday can make them feel forgotten and sad. But that has not been the case for children staying at the Human Options emergency shelter. For 27 years Good Friends of Human Options has made sure our children get a birthday party and celebrate holidays, as well as opportunities for summer camps and picnics. In addition to birthdays and holidays, Good Friends has met many needs for our families over the years. They have funded art therapy supplies for the children’s program, provided school supplies and backpacks, and even scholarships to technical school or college for children and women wishing to earn a degree and a chance for a better life. Good Friends has also paid for oral surgeons, dentists, and eyeglasses for children who come to the shelter and need this type of care. The Good Friends have played a critical role in helping Human Options truly bring safety, healing, and a way forward to our families.
Binh Pham has been a phenomenal volunteer with Human Options for over two years, giving over 200 hours of pro bono time. He has consistently gone above and beyond for his Human Options clients, whom he represents in Restraining Order cases. His clients consistently rave about his passion, hard work, and perhaps most importantly, how respectful he is towards them. A client he worked with this year described him as an “alchemist,” who had taken the “horribly lead-heavy details” about her ordeal, and “rendered them into evidence, into what amounts to golden fact-nuggets the court can use to change (her) life.” With Binh’s help, that client was able to reach a favorable settlement in her Restraining Order case which she felt would have been impossible without him.
On Thursday, April 28th, Human Options will honor Good Friends of Human Options and Binh Pham at the 40th Annual Spirit of Volunteerism Awards Luncheon, Orange County’s largest and longest running volunteer recognition event. Good Friends and Binh are also nominated for the Giving is Living Award, celebrating the work of an especially influential organization, family or business that participates in outstanding community volunteerism. Please take a moment to visit the Spirit of Volunteerism website and read about Good Friends and Binh’s honor. We also encourage you to give kudos to these wonderful volunteers by leaving a message of praise and recognition on their honoree page.
