In the past 3 years, Human Options has seen the need for safety and shelter for domestic violence victims increase by 46%, while our funding has decreased by 18%. Last year, with gifts from friends like you, Human Options changed the lives of almost 3,500 Orange County women and their children. That number grows daily, and we are compelled to do more. That’s why we are asking you to help.

By joining our “Friendship Circle” annual giving program you can directly impact the lives of women and their children who are desperate to escape their abusive situations. Every dollar makes a difference and with 80% of all gifts going directly to programs and services, you can be sure you are contributing where it counts.

Your gift provides shelter, safety and counseling for a woman and her children.

Be a Friend: $100 – Provides a woman and her children with 1 day of help

Be a Supporter: $500 – Provides a woman and her children with 5 days of help

Be a Partner: $1,000 – Provides a woman and her children with 10 days of help

Be a Sustainer: $2,500 – Provides a woman and her children with 25 days help

As a Friendship Circle Member, you will restore hope and rebuild the lives of women and children. Women like Nancy, a shelter graduate and mother of two boys. Here is her story:

“Like most young women, my dream of being married was a partnership between a mother and father, tucking the kids into bed together, taking care of the children together, family vacations, romance and caring for each other.  None of that happened.

After our two boys were born I kept hoping it would get better, hoping he would realize how much damage he was causing … actually, it got worse.  It got to the point where just hearing his keys outside the front door each night would trigger feelings of anxiety and dread… I just never knew what was going to come walking through that door.  Then my son began to share with other members of our family that he didn’t like it when daddy was mean to mom.  I knew it was time to make a change.

The call to Human Options was the scariest call I have ever made but it was the best call I ever made.

I immediately felt safe – scared, but safe.  Every staff member and volunteer was so kind and calm and positive to me and my boys.  Literally every staff person and volunteer at the shelter helped us. Our therapist, our case manager, the children’s program and the classes were so helpful.  I learned that the “why” doesn’t matter.  The point is abuse is happening, and it’s up to me to say that I won’t take it anymore.

I have thought back to how the sound of those keys in the door used to make me feel.  And I realized that today, two years after graduating from the shelter, keys have a whole new meaning for me!

Now they’re my keys!  The key to my condo that my boys and I are now renting, the key to my office where I work, the key to my sons’ school where they are absolutely thriving and the key to my car. I own my own car for the first time in 3 years!
