Get Involved - Human Options

Lives changed with your donation.
Donations allow us to provide women and children who have experienced abuse with safety, healing and a way forward. Contributions also fund counseling, legal advocacy, education programs, and elder abuse prevention. Every $100 provides one family with one full day of safety and healing at our emergency shelter. You can make a one-time gift or make it recurring – $5 a week adds up to $260 in one year and only $10 a month equals $120 at year-end. Donations can be made electronically or by check. We accept all major credit cards (American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa). Every gift helps!

Sisterhood is a community of women that meets four times a year to complete hands-on projects to benefit Human Options’ shelter and residential clients, who are survivors of domestic violence.

Our 2022 meetings have been set! Please join us in: February, May, August and November 17th.

Due to the confidential nature of our work, volunteer opportunities are limited to emergency hotline volunteers and/or attorneys interested in providing pro bono legal services in the areas of Family Law and Immigration. A description of each volunteer opportunity is below:

Pro Bono Services

Human Options Legal Advocacy program greatly benefits from the pro bono services provided by our volunteer attorneys. Opportunities are available to provide advice and counsel, and representation for Domestic Violence Restraining Order cases and other Family Law matters. Human Options provides introductory training for attorneys interested in volunteering but are not familiar with the domestic violence restraining order process. We also have an occasional need for attorneys in other areas of law (tax, personal injury, immigration, employment, etc.) If you have a specialized practice and wish to be added to our pro bono consultant list, please reach out at the email address below.

Requirements & Criteria:

  1. Volunteers must be licensed to practice law in California and carry their own malpractice insurance.
  2. Volunteers must complete a pro bono onboarding training with the Legal Advocacy Program Manager before meeting with clients (2-4 hours depending on experience level).
  3. Volunteers must commit to picking up at least one case per year on a pro bono basis required (DVRO, other Family Law, or Immigration Law if appropriate).
  4. If you meet the above criteria, please email [email protected] with a copy of your resume, and let us know why you are interested in volunteering with us.

Emergency Hotline

Hotline volunteers help answer hotline calls and document each call. Emergency hotline volunteers are asked to do at least one, 3 hour shift per week. All hotline volunteers are mandated by the State of California to complete a 40 hour domestic violence awareness training before being eligible to volunteer.

Human Options offers the 40 hour domestic violence awareness training twice a year (Spring and Fall). For more information about this training and when it is being offered next, please visit our Events page.
