Laila’s Story

Mother in white dress with three boys from infant to pre-teen

Laila was a devoted stay-at-home mom to her three boys, living in a local beach community. Laila’s world took a dark turn when her husband’s struggle with substances led to manipulative behaviors and emotional abuse towards her and their children. To protect her family, Laila bravely sought a Domestic Violence Temporary Restraining Order (DVTRO) and reached out for support through Human Options.

With a compassionate legal advocate by her side, Laila faced the court with courage, ultimately obtaining a one-year Permanent Domestic Violence Restraining Order. Empowered by this, she received assistance navigating her custody and divorce proceedings. Through one of our family law clinics, she learned how to request a move-away order to Utah, where a supportive group of friends, family, and church community awaited her. After a thorough child custody investigation, the court recommended that Laila maintain full custody and supported her decision to relocate to Utah. Despite her ex-husband’s continued attempts to disrupt their lives, like violating the DVRO by vandalizing her family home and sending manipulative messages, Laila stood firm. With her legal advocate’s unwavering support, she filed for a renewal of her DVRO.

In August 2024, Laila faced the court again, accompanied by her legal advocate, and successfully received a five-year extension of her DVRO. Today, Laila is happily remarried and thriving in Utah with her blended family. Her children thrive in an environment of love, stability, and healthy love. Laila reflects on her journey with pride, sharing how she and her family have transformed their lives, leaving behind the shadows of abuse and embracing their new life and future.
