Change Starts with Us: Shining the Light Beyond October

By: Arezoo Shahbazi Roa, MSW, Sr. Prevention & Strategic Partnerships Director

Every October, communities across the nation recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to elevate survivor voices, honor lives impacted by relationship violence, and strengthen our collective commitment to prevention. This year, Human Options invites our community to #ShineTheLight with a simple but powerful reminder: Change Starts with Us.

Relationship violence thrives in silence, isolation, and shame. It can affect people of every age, gender, background, and neighborhood. While many imagine domestic violence as something that happens behind closed doors, its impact extends into our schools, workplaces, healthcare systems, faith communities, and families. The reality is that relationship violence is not just an individual issue. It is a community issue, and community issues require community solutions.

Too often, people ask what they can do when faced with a problem that feels so large. The answer begins with understanding that meaningful change is rarely created through one grand gesture. It is built through everyday actions. A conversation that challenges harmful beliefs. A teacher who recognizes warning signs in a student. A friend who listens without judgment. A coworker who offers support. A community member who chooses to learn, speak up, volunteer, or advocate. Every action matters because every action has the power to interrupt isolation and create connection.

Throughout October, Human Options is bringing communities together through educational webinars, Courage Over Comfort conversations, our Annual Fall Luncheon, and Shine the Light Walking Vigils across Orange County. These events are more than opportunities to raise awareness. They are opportunities to transform awareness into action. They remind us that prevention is possible when communities are informed, engaged, and willing to stand alongside survivors.

One of the most powerful symbols of this year’s campaign is the Shine the Light Walking Vigil. As community members walk together, they move through stories of loss, resilience, healing, and hope. The journey serves as a visual reminder that while relationship violence can leave lasting harm, healing is possible when survivors are surrounded by support and when communities refuse to look away. Every light carried represents a shared commitment to creating a future free from fear.

Prevention begins long before a crisis occurs. It starts when we teach young people about healthy relationships, consent, respect, and emotional safety. It grows when organizations adopt survivor-centered policies and when leaders use their voices to challenge harmful norms. It becomes sustainable when communities invest in education, support services, and systems that help survivors rebuild their lives. Prevention is not a moment. It is an ongoing choice to create environments where violence is less likely to occur and where help is available when it does.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we invite you to consider the role you can play. You do not need to be an expert to make a difference. You simply need to care enough to take the next step. Learn the signs of relationship violence. Attend a community event. Share resources. Start a conversation. Believe survivors. Support prevention efforts. Because when individuals take action together, those actions become a movement.

The future we want is possible: a future where every person feels safe, valued, respected, and free from violence. That future will not be built by one organization alone. It will be built by communities choosing courage over comfort, action over silence, and hope over fear. This October, and every day after, let’s continue to shine the light. Because change starts with us.
