Spirit of Volunteerism

At Human Options, we believe in the power of individuals to create lasting change. Every survivor’s journey toward healing is strengthened by a community that shows up with courage, compassion, and generosity.

In honor of Volunteer Appreciation Month, Human Options is proud to spotlight our three nominees celebrated at OneOC’s 50th Anniversary Spirit of Volunteerism Awards. Their dedication reflects the impact of transforming awareness into action through Humanity in Action, our collective movement to end relationship violence in Orange County.

As Human Options marks our 45th anniversary, we are reminded that our story is shaped by individuals who choose to care. Every life touched by every act of service becomes part of a legacy rooted in compassion and resilience. The individuals we recognize here are part of that legacy in action, helping survivors and their families find safe-haven, healing, and the courage to end the cycle of violence.

Guadalupe Sosa

Guadalupe Sosa is a graduate of Human Options, an entrepreneur, and a leader on our Survivor Advisory Council—a group of five survivors whose lived experiences help shape organizational strategy, program design, and community education. Through their insight, the Council deepens our understanding of the systems that impact survivor safety, from housing instability to economic insecurity, ensuring our work remains grounded in real experiences.

From ages 14 to 24, Guadalupe endured an abusive relationship while raising four children—an experience that now fuels her commitment to advocacy and education. Drawing on her journey, she brings powerful insight into supporting healthy teen and young adult relationships, working to break the silence surrounding dating violence and empower others to seek safety and support.

Today, Guadalupe is a dedicated advocate who speaks at community events and has shared her story with the Orange County Board of Supervisors to help secure funding for critical survivors at our walk-in centers.

Caroline Marchant

Caroline Marchant holds a deep belief in the power of community. For 16 years, Caroline has gathered friends, neighbors, and partners to create a beautiful event at her home, the Holiday Boutique, with proceeds benefiting survivors and their families at Human Options. We are deeply grateful to Caroline, whose leadership and compassion help extend our mission beyond our shelter walls and into the community.

This event has raised over $30,000 for survivors and their families, as well as providing direct support through gift cards, toys, and requested items for families at our emergency shelter. Her steadfast support and deep commitment to our mission inspires us to walk alongside survivors on their healing journey.

Sunwest Bank

Sunwest Bank is a catalyst for financial empowerment at Human Options, partnering with us to develop a customized curriculum that meets the unique needs of survivors recovering from financial abuse. Their team of volunteers leads biweekly workshops at our Emergency Shelter, guiding participants through budgeting, credit education, and financial planning—all with compassion and trauma-informed care.

This transformative partnership is powered by Kevin Fuhrmann, Vice President at Sunwest Bank, who not only designed the curriculum but also organizes volunteers to work one-on-one with survivors to help them navigate complex financial challenges. His leadership ensures that every session is tailored, practical, and deeply impactful.

Beyond their hands-on support, Sunwest Bank also invested in our Acceleration Campaign to accelerate the pathway to safe and stable housing for survivors. Their commitment—through both funding and volunteerism—helps families rebuild with dignity, independence, and hope.
