MORGAN’S STORY

Like many teenagers, Morgan dreams about the future. She loves the idea of traveling someday, hopes to attend college, and wants to build a career as a photographer. Thoughtful, creative, and determined, she has always possessed a quiet resilience that helped her navigate challenges beyond her years. Those closest to her describe a young person who cares deeply about others and continues to move forward, even when life feels overwhelming.

But growing up, Morgan faced experiences no child should have to carry alone. For years, she witnessed violence between her parents, often finding herself caught in the middle of conflict, uncertainty, and fear. What began as exposure to repeated arguments escalated over time, eventually leading to law enforcement involvement and the temporary separation of her family. Morgan and her sister were placed in the care of their grandparents while their parents navigated domestic violence-related legal issues.

Although Morgan and her sister would eventually be reunited with their parents, the emotional impact of those experiences remained. Morgan carried the weight of what she had seen and experienced for years. Like many young people who grow up surrounded by violence, she struggled with her mental health and found it difficult to process everything she had endured.

Recognizing their family needed support, Morgan’s family reached out to Human Options. Through counseling, Morgan found a safe space to process her experiences, build healthy coping skills, and focus on her healing. Over time, she became more engaged, confident, and comfortable expressing her thoughts and feelings. With the support of counseling, positive self-affirmations, and new coping strategies, Morgan reduced harmful behaviors, strengthened her self-confidence, and began to recognize her own resilience. Most importantly, she learned to trust in her ability to navigate challenges and shape a positive future for herself.

Today, Morgan is preparing for one of life’s exciting milestones: graduating from middle school and beginning high school. She plans to continue her therapeutic journey and remains committed to the healthy coping skills she has worked so hard to build. When reflecting on the positive self-affirmations she practiced during counseling, Morgan shared: “Those felt good to say out loud to myself. I have never done that before. Thank you for your help with this.”

Morgan’s story is a powerful reminder that healing doesn’t erase the past, it helps young people reclaim their future. With support, encouragement, and tools to build resilience, Morgan is moving forward with confidence, carrying with her not only the lessons she has learned, but also the dreams she continues to pursue.
