Mariah was once full of life and joy—a mother of two, embracing every moment as a mother with excitement. But everything changed when she entered an abusive relationship. What began as small shifts soon grew into verbal, psychological, and mental abuse that left her questioning her worth and feeling drained. Over time, Mariah felt trapped in a cycle of confusion and isolation, unable to recognize the toll it was taking.
After years of silent suffering, she reached a turning point. Mariah knew she had to leave, not only for herself but for the well-being of her children. Seeking healing, she started therapy and learned that the abuse wasn’t her fault—it was part of a pattern she could break free from. Her therapist suggested the Human Options PEP (Positive Empowerment Program) to help her better understand the abuse she’d endured.
At first, Mariah was anxious about the program, unsure of what emotions it might stir. But after just a few classes, something changed. She began to connect with the material, gaining clarity about her experiences and feeling empowered. With each lesson, her confidence grew. She became eager to learn, even reaching out for more resources and support.
Mariah is still attending PEP, exploring other community resources, and continuing therapy. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “The courses are doing so much for me. The topics validate my experiences, and I’m learning so much about myself. I never knew that denial was a gift my mind used to protect me. I’m amazed and thankful for my body and mind in a way I’ve never felt before.”
Mariah’s story is one of strength, transformation, and courage. Each step she takes brings her closer to reclaiming her life, empowering herself to rise above the past and build a safe and violence-free future for herself and her children.
