Elena’s Story

Before coming to the U.S., Elena had a stable life in Mexico, including her own home. Driven by her partner’s promise of a brighter future, she took a leap of faith and moved to America. But the reality she faced was far from the dreams she had been sold. Her partner not only blocked her from working but also failed to secure the promised visa, leaving Elena and her daughter isolated and confined in a life she hadn’t envisioned.

The turning point came when Elena, in a moment of profound courage, decided to flee from Fresno to Orange County with her daughter. Their journey took an unexpected but pivotal turn at the Anaheim train station, where, lost and seeking a way back to Mexico, Elena encountered two strangers. One of these compassionate individuals encouraged her to reach out to a domestic violence hotline, a suggestion that would change her life.

Through the support of our residential program, Elena began her journey to rebuild her life. Initially, she grappled with feelings of doubt, needing to prove her honesty just to access basic necessities. Yet, with each passing day, Elena’s strength and confidence blossomed. She learned to ask for help with conviction, embracing her new environment with grace and self-assurance.

Today, Elena and her daughter are thriving in a housing program through one of our partners, and continue on their healing journey. Elena’s own words echo her unwavering determination: “Quiero estar aquĂ y echarle ganas” – “I want to be here and put in the effort.”
